I do my fight training about 3 hours every night at the gym. I normally don't get to train with people my size (115 lbs) because my training partners are an average of 20-50 lbs heavier than me. They exercise the best of control when sparring with me (and they are all super nice to me), but I always know I'm coming in to get my ass kicked every day. Yet I still do it, and sometimes it's disheartening when I can't seem to get a break.
But today, I had a moment of triumph during my ground training. We were drilling take downs, switching partners every 2 minutes. Naturally, as the smallest, I was getting taken down quite easily. Every attempt I made at a take down would be squashed by my opponent's brute strength. Then I was up against the heaviest of them at around 200 lbs. I was pretty sure that he too was going to use his strength to get the take down, but I swallowed my nerves and went up against him because that was my job. As we clenched, I knew my options for a take down were limited. Then I remembered the take down of falling onto my back and sweeping him over my head with the leverage of my foot in between his legs. It was risky because I knew that if he put his full weight on me at the right moment, I would be smashed. But I was determined to not let my fears prevent me from trying things. That was the whole point of training, to develop my skills. To my pleasant surprise, it worked like a charm, and I ended up in full mount on top of him. Had I given into my fears of going up against the stronger, I would not know what I was capable of. Yay for little people and technique!
